Summer Cemetery Preservation and Restoration
June 18 2022: chapter members cleaning gravestones.

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, Minnesota State Society DAR (MNSSDAR) state conference speaker introduced Daughters to the Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery. Members learned the process and the items needed to properly clean a headstone. Members enjoyed learning what to do, networking, and trying to read the names of the deceased who were buried there.
Members used a variety of tools such as D2 cleaner, soft toothbrushes, larger soft scrub brushes, plastic scrapers, spray bottles, shovels, etc. This event was part of the MNSSDAR state regent's cemetery restoration project. |
Monument Chapter, NSDAR, Summer Cemetery and Restoration
Monument Chapter, NSDAR, chose to take part in the state regent's project by volunteering at the Oak Hill Cemetery from July through September, every Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to Noon. What a blessing to have such beautiful weather each week!
The members used a collection of tools for the cleaning process and preserved many gravestones. This chapter 2022 project resulted in 228 headstones unearthed and cleaned and 42 upright headstones cleaned. As the members worked towards restoration and preservation, they were moved by the infant or young children graves and curious about the stories of veteran and family graves. Every week, a member would research the story of a grave they brought back to life. The chapter members look forward to returning next summer to continue progress and would like to work towards a program to honor veterans buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.
